In February 2024, Osprey identified and communicated notable escalations in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), prompted by heightened military activity and emerging threats to aviation. Beginning with the initial Osprey:Squawk detection on 8 February and continuing throughout the month, Osprey proactively issued several Critical Alerts and a Regulatory Update, ensuring that operators remained well-informed about potential risks.
Among our key findings was a significant Critical Alert on 12 February regarding the deployment of a new Rwandan surface-to-air missile system, followed by updates on missile activity, airstrikes affecting Goma Airport, and the US State Department's calls for Rwanda to withdraw its SAM systems. As a result, we elevated the risk levels for the eastern DRC airspace to HIGH, offering altitude-specific guidance to safeguard crews and assets.
On 26 February, Osprey issued a UK NOTAM for eastern DRC up to 25,000 feet AGL, further underscoring the persistent elevated risks. Throughout this challenging situation, Osprey remained committed to providing clear, data-driven insights to empower our clients in navigating the rapidly evolving operational landscape.
